World Environment Day:Massive cleanliness drive held at Sonamarg

GANDERBAL, JUNE 05: To mark the celebration of world Environment Day, a massive Cleanliness drive was organized in the meadows of Sonamarg.

The drive was organized by Sonamarg Development Authority in collaboration with Tourism department which was flagged off by the CEO, Sonamarg Development Authority, Mushtaq Ahmad Rather and Deputy Director Tourism, Ahsan-ul Haq Chasti.

World Environment Day, which is celebrated annually on June 5 across the globe, is one of the biggest events organised by the United Nations (UN) to generate awareness about the significance of nature. The day is celebrated to tell people that nature should be respected for its values.

The drive was carried from the SDA office and went throughout the Sonamarg market, bus stand and Fishpoint.

Employees of SDA, Hotlier Association Sonamarg, Shopkeepers and locals participated in the drive who collected the waste including polythene, plastic bags and plastic bottles from these palces and was later dumped for proper disposal in a Solid Waste Management Plant installed at Sarbal Sonamarg.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Director Tourism said that to commemorate the special day, Department is organizing varous programs throughout the valley with an objective to encourage awareness and enhance commitment towards ecosystem restoration which has been degraded by deforestation, pollution, and other human activities.

He also highlighted the importance of cleanliness and preserving environment for tourism development in Sonamarg and in this regard sought cooperation from all stake holders.

Later, a plantation drive was also held within the premises of tourist Cafeteria at Wusan.
