Srinagar, July 28 : In a tragic loss for Kashmir’s cultural and artistic community, renowned comedian Bashir Kotur has passed away after a brief illness. He was widely loved for his powerful stage presence, wit, and deep connection with Kashmiri society through humor and satire.
Bashir Kotur, whose real name was Bashir Ahmad Bhat, hailed from Wathoora village in Budgam district. Over the decades, he became a household name in Kashmiri households for his compelling performances in dramas and stage shows that reflected the everyday struggles and hopes of the people.
With a style that blended humor with social commentary, Kotur brought joy and awareness to thousands across the Valley and beyond.
In recent years, Bashir Kotur had stepped away from the stage due to lack of institutional support and financial hardship. Despite his contributions to culture, he had to take up driving an auto-rickshaw to support his family, which sparked widespread debate over the treatment and recognition of artists in the region.
Earlier this year, he publicly bid farewell to his acting career, expressing deep disappointment over government inaction and the marginalization of veteran performers.
The details of his funeral and last rites will be shared by the family shortly. A public gathering in his honor is expected in his native village of Wathoora, where hundreds are likely to attend to pay their respect.
