Srinagar 20 Aug : At least five persons died and eight others were injured after their bus was hit by a landslide in Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

An official said that big boulders and rocks came down from a hillock, trapping the bus bearing registration number JK14 AD 3812 in Kulgadi area of Drabshalla on Doda-Kishtwar highway at 10 am.

He said five passengers died on the spot and eight others sustained injuries. The bus was carrying 13 passengers-most of them from Udhampur and Bhadarwah when the accident took place.

Dy SP traffic NH1B Zuhaib Hassan said villagers who rushed to the spot saw blood soaked bodies and the injured passengers lying inside the mangled remains of the vehicle.

“They somehow managed to open the driver’s cabin door and the rear part of the bus to pull out the bodies and the injured. The bus driver had lost control over the vehicle after a huge boulder hit the wind screen,” he said.

“All the injured were taken to trauma hospital Thathri where doctors declared five of them as brought dead. Later all the injured were shifted to District Hospital Kishtwar,” he added.

Reports said that three seriously passengers, identified as Deepak, Kaku Ram and Dev Raj, were airlifted to Government Medical College Jammu for specialized treatment
