Ganderbal, April 12: The District Development Commissioner Ganderbal, Shafqat Iqbal today directed the concerned authorities to expedite the work on breached spot on the Sindh Extension Canal at Malshahibagh in Ganderbal.

The DDC gave these directions, during his visit to the breached spot which resulted from sloughing in December last year and affected the 6.8 MGD Alasteng WTP, which supplies water to several areas in the north of Srinagar and several parts of Ganderbal district.

Pertinently, the portable water is supplied to 15 lakh people of Srinagar district and about 1 lakh population of Ganderbal district besides several Hectares of agricultural land is also dependent on same canal for irrigation.
 
The ADC, Farooq Ahmad Baba and Executive Engineer I&FC, Ganderbal accompanied the DDC.

On the occasion the DDC took the stock of the ongoing repairing work on breached spot. He was briefed about the excavation plan and current progress on the repairing work.

To ensure that the affected areas receive adequate drinking water supply, the DC directed the concerned to ensure sufficient rows of temporary pipes are laid to bypass the damaged spot to overcome the shortage of portable water in the affected areas.
 
The concerned authorities also raised the issue of material supply and issuance of movement passes to the workers for which the DDC asked the Executive Engineer to send list of workers to the DC office for issuance of necessary passes.

Keeping in view coming irrigation season, the DDC directed the Executive Engineer I&FC, Ganderbal to expedite the work by engaging more men and machinery and charge the canal at the earliest.
