Jammu, May 22: With already no respite in sight, the weatherman has further predicted that the maximum temperature by May end can breach 44 degrees Celcius in Jammu amid an ongoing heatwave condition.

The IMD official here on Tuesday said that there is no major forecast of rain and the weather will generally remain dry till May end.

“As the day temp is recorded between 41 degrees to 42 degrees, it is expected to cross 44 degrees in coming days, probably by May 27-28,” said an official.

As per a year-wise detailed IMD image, the maximum temperature recorded on May 26, 1984 in Jammu was 47.4 degrees and it was an all-time record.

As per the image, on May 23, 2023, maximum temperature recorded was 42.0; on May 15, 2022 it was 43.9; on May 27, 2021, it was 41.6; on May 28, 2020 it was 42.6; on May 31, 2019 it was 44.1; on May 30, 2018, it was 43.5; on May 27, 2017, it was 41.7; on May 20, 2016 it was 43.2; on May 26, 2015 it was 40.5 and on May 29, 2014 it was 41.8 degrees Celsius.

The official said that from May 21 to 28, generally dry weather with possibility of thundershower activity at isolated places can’t be ruled out while overall, no significant weather activity till May 28.

He said that heat wave over plains of Jammu Division with hot and dry weather over hilly districts of Jammu Division and plains of Kashmir Division likely to continue during next 5 days.

Meanwhile Jammu School Education Department has changed the school timing. The schools will now function from 8 am to 12 noon in view of prevailing heat wave.

Sonam Lotus, the Director of the Meteorological Center in Leh said, “The maximum temperature recorded on Monday was 42.3 degrees and it was 42.5 degrees recorded on Tuesday.”

He said that the mercury will soar further in coming days.–(UNI)
