Srinagar, May 5 (GNS): Detained Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, has died in a hospital in Jammu, officials said on Wednesday.

The septuagenarian was shifted from a Kot Balwal jail to GMC hospital Jammu yesterday, sources said.

Dr. A. D. S. Manhas. Medical Superintendent, Medical College Hospital, Jammu, confirmed the death of the senior Hurriyat Conference leader to GNS. “His RT-PCR for covid-19 is awaited. His rapid test had come negative,” he said.

Sehrai was detained last year and booked under Public Safety Act. The 76-year-old was considered as a strong contender to take over as chief of the Hurriyat Conference after its former chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani, in a letter, announced his dissociation from the amalgam. (GNS)
