Srinagar, 27 July, KDC: Government of India on Monday informed the Supreme Court that senior advocate and Jammu and Kashmir high court Bar Association president Mian Abdul Qayoom who is under detention will be released on August 6,official sources said.

Highly placed sources told news agency KDC that the move comes after Qayoom challenged the May 28, 2020 Order of the J&K High Court which had dismissed his habeas corpus petition and upheld his detention under the J&K Public Safety Act, 1978.

Senior Advocate Dushyant Dave and Adv Vrinda Grover also argued that Qayoom should be released forthwith as every day under illegal detection is unconstitutional.

Sources also said that Qayoom can be released from detention immediately on bail as his period of detention expires on August 8.

Pertinently, Qayoom is under detention since last year’s August 5 after Government of India abrogated the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the state in to two union territories. (KDC)
