2 Cops, As Many Civilians Killed; 4 Persons Injured In The Attack

Srinagar, June 13: Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, Vijay Kumar on Saturday said that two local Lashker-e-Toiba militants were involved in an attack in Sopore area of north Kashmir earlier in the day in which two policemen and as many as civilians were killed.

Four more persons, two policemen and civilian each, were injured in the attack which took place at main market Sopore at around noon, police said.

“Two local LeT (militants) identified as Fayaz War and Mudasir Pandit were involved in today’s attack,” the IGP told GNS.

The top police officer visited Sopore soon after incident and inspected place of occurrence and held meeting with Army’s Sector commander, DIsG of JKP and CRPF in the north Kashmir town.

“JKP and security forces are on the job and these (militants) will be neutralised at the earliest,” he said.

Meanwhile a police spokesman said at about 1200 hours, militants fired indiscriminately upon a police party “which was performing Covid enforcement duties at main market Sopore.”

In this incident, he said, four policemen and equal number of civilians received bullet injuries and were shifted to nearby hospital for treatment. Among the injured, he said, police personnel constables Showkat Ahmad and Waseem Ahmad succumbed to their injuries along with two civilians identified as Manzoor Ahmad Shalla of Shalimar Colony Sopore and Bashir Ahmad of Mahrajpora Sopore also succumbed to their injuries.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that militants linked with LeT are involved in the attack. Soon after the attack the area was cordoned off and efforts are on to nab the (militants) involved in the attack.”

He said Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law. “Police is vigorously investigating all the circumstances of this incident,” he said.

A wreath laying ceremony led by DGP J&K Dilbag Singh (IPS) was held at DPL Srinagar, where floral tributes were paid to the two constables.

SDG CRPF Sanjay Arora, ADGP Armed J&K SJM Gillani (IPS), ADGP Security SD Singh Jamwal (IPS), IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar (IPS, IG CRPF (Ops) Kashmir Deepak Ratan (IPS), DIG CKR Amit Kumar (IPS), DIG NKR Sujeet Kumar (IPS), SSP Srinagar, besides, other officers and officials and family members of the policemen also laid floral wreaths on the mortal remains and paid tributes to the duo.
