Ganderbal, Jun16: Once a pristine and picturesque tourist destinationn, Wayil is now battling an alarming rise in littering. Polythene bags, plastic wrappers, and other waste materials are strewn across the area, marring its natural beauty.
Nestled amidst majestic mountains and along the gushing Sindh Nallah, Wayil has long been a peaceful retreat, especially popular among local tourists from across Kashmir. However, the increasing influx of visitors has brought with it a disturbing trend of irresponsible waste disposal.
Wayil does not fall under any municipal jurisdiction, which means there is no proper waste collection infrastructure in place. This has worsened the situation, leaving no option for systematic disposal of garbage.
A local resident told Kashmir Despatch, “Wayil is a beautiful offbeat destination. The banks of the Sindh River offer a perfect spot to relax, but the irresponsible behavior of some visitors, who carelessly throw polythene and other trash around, is ruining it.” The community has urged all tourists to act responsibly and refrain from littering.
Although the Swachh Bharat Mission (Rural) was envisioned to ensure cleanliness in rural public spaces, no visible activity or implementation is taking place in Wayil.
Locals are now appealing to the concerned authorities to intervene. They are calling for proper awareness campaigns, waste disposal facilities, and regular cleanliness drives to preserve the natural charm of Wayil.
