Srinagar, Sept 8: Former chief minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti today said that her party will approach Police to seek registration of an FIR against J&K Waqf Board chairperson Darakhshan Andrabi, accusing her of “deliberately hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims.”
She alleged that the party was not allowed to register an FIR against the Waqf Board chairperson at Nigeen Police Station and would now again approach police.
“I urge the police to initiate an FIR immediately given the gravity of the offence deliberately hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims thereby provoking them,” Mehbooba said in a post on X.
On Friday, a group of worshippers defaced the emblem engraved on an inaugural plaque within the Hazratbal shrine premises the Valley’s most revered Muslim shrine that houses the relic of Prophet Mohammad alleging that their religious sentiments had been hurt.
Reacting sharply, Waqf Board chairperson Darakhshan Andrabi described the protestors as “terrorists” and demanded their arrest under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
J&K Police have already registered a case in connection with the vandalisation of a plaque at Hazratbal shrine, with the Srinagar Member Parliament Aga Ruhullah claiming the detention of around 30 people.
The has officially not made any statement on the issue. The Hazratbal controversy has snowballed into a political storm, with opposition parties accusing the Waqf Board chairperson of insensitivity and demanding legal action against her.
Mehbooba on Saturday had also demanded that Andrabi be booked under sections of hurting religious sentiments.–(UNI)
