Ganderbal, May 1:In a significant application of India’s newly enacted criminal laws, Ganderbal Police has successfully secured convictions against two individuals for public nuisance, resulting in a sentence of community service—a first of its kind in the district.

The convicted individuals, Shabir Ahmad Shah and Mohd Asif Khatana, both residents of Nila-Najwan, were found guilty under Section 355 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for creating a public disturbance while intoxicated at Chinner Crossing. Their behavior posed a threat to peace and public order, prompting swift legal action.

The Hon’ble Court, acknowledging the gravity of the offense and utilizing the provisions under the new criminal framework, sentenced both offenders to perform community service in the form of cleanliness duties at the JMIC Court Kangan.

This case marks a progressive shift in the justice system, highlighting a rehabilitative approach that aims to reform rather than solely punish. Ganderbal Police has been praised for its prompt response and effective implementation of the new criminal code, setting a precedent for future enforcement in the region.

The move is being seen as a step towards community-centric justice and responsible policing in line with modern legal reforms.
