Ganderbal:District Legal Services Authority, Ganderbal in coordination with the Tehsil Legal Services Committee, Ganderbal organizes awareness program on “Consumer Protection and Legal Remedies” today on 22nd of August, 2025 at Qamaria Model Educational Institute, Ganderbal. The event was organized under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and J&K Legal Services Authority.
The program aimed to empower students with a comprehensive understanding of consumer rights and provide insights into seeking legal recourse in cases of exploitation. Furthermore, program highlighted the pivotal role of Legal Services Authorities in offering assistance, guidance, and support to consumers in consumer-related matters.
The event was successfully conducted under the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice, High Court of J&K and Ladakh (Patron-in-Chief, J&K Legal Services Authority) and Hon’ble Mr. Justice Sanjeev Kumar, Executive Chairman, J&K Legal Services Authority. The initiative was effectively overseen by Ms. Shazia Tabasum, Member Secretary, J&K Legal Services Authority, and Mr. Abdul Nasir, Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, Ganderbal, along with the guidance of Mr. Sheikh Babar Hussain, Secretary, DLSA Ganderbal & Mr. Moonis Wahid, I/C Chairman, Tehsil Legal Services Committee (TLSC) Ganderbal.
Ms. Burjeena Hameed, Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel, ALADC, delivered a detailed speech on the importance of consumer protection in safeguarding people from unfair trade practices, defective goods, and deficient services. She highlighted the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, including the establishment of Consumer Commissions at various levels. She stated that consumer protection is a vital aspect of any society, ensuring that individuals can make purchases and engage in services with confidence that their rights are safeguarded.
She highlighted the role of consumer forums in addressing grievances and providing remedies, and explained that these forums offer various legal remedies to restore consumer rights and hold service providers accountable. These forums ensure that consumers are protected from unfair trade practices, defective goods, or substandard services. She further added that Consumer forums offer a variety of legal remedies that can be sought by aggrieved consumers.
Concluding her address, she emphasized that the legal remedies available through consumer forums are designed to protect consumers from exploitation and unfair practices, ultimately empowering them with knowledge of their rights and responsibilities.
