SRINAGAR, JUNE 30:The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Srinagar has arrested a Block Development Council (BDC) member while demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹50,000 in connection with facilitating official clearances.
As per officials, a case under FIR No. 12/2025 has been registered against Mohammad Shaban Chopan, a sitting District Development Council (DDC) member from Dara Harwan, and his tout, Ghulam Mohammad Khathana, under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and relevant sections of BNS.
The action was taken following a written complaint alleging that the accused demanded a bribe of ₹5 lakh for facilitating the issuance of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for a scholars’ boarding school at Dara. It was further alleged that an official inspection was arranged to create pressure on the complainant and demand bribe money. An initial installment of ₹50,000 along with a blank signed cheque was demanded as part of the bribe.
ACB discreetly verified the allegations, confirming the authenticity of the complaint and establishing the demand for a bribe by the public representative through his tout.
Following the registration of the case, further investigation into the matter is underway.
The ACB has reiterated its commitment to act against corruption and urged the public to report any such instances through the helpline or by visiting the nearest ACB office.
