Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday ordered the closure of schools near the Line of Control (LoC) in Degwar area of Poonch district following heavy exchange of fire and shelling between the armies of India and Pakistan.

Reports said that shelling and firing from across the border started at 8:45 am in Degwar, Maldiyalan and Tarwan areas along the LoC.

There was no report of any injuries, they said.

An Indian army statement said that Pakistan army initiated “unprovoked and indiscriminate” firing of small arms, automatics and mortars from 8:45 am.

“Indian army is retaliating strongly and effectively. Firing is still on,” said the statement.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner Poonch Tariq Zargar ordered the closure of all government and private schools today in Degwar area.
