Srinagar, March 6: Militant outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) has said its operational commander Mufti Waqas “embraced martyrdom” in a gunfight with forces on Monday night at Awantipora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

In a statement issued to news agency GNS, JeM said Mufti Waqas had been active in Kashmir for a long time and had inflicted heavy damage to Indian security establishment “from Srinagar to Jammu”.

“The martyrdom of Mufti Waqas is a big tragedy for Jaish-e-Mohammad and the freedom movement,” JeM said, adding, “India is celebrating the martyrdom of Mufti Waqas but this celebration won’t last long. We will avenge (the killing of) Mufti Waqas soon.”
