Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir police on Wednesday resorted to tear gas shelling on girl students in Gojwara area of Downtown Srinagar.
The girl students were protesting against the alleged rape of 3 year old girl in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district.
The students while demanding justice raised slogans against the accused.
They were raising slogans in favour of the victims of Bandipora and Kathua, who was raped last year in Rasana area of Kathua.
The students demanded capital punishment for the victim and raised slogans like ‘Mulzim ko phansi do (Hang the culprit)’ “Mulzim ko goli maro (Shoot the culprit)”
Police resorted to tear gas shelling after the students tried to march towards main road in Gojwara.
Talking to The Kashmir Walla the locals condemned the police action on students, “They are demanding justice for a child who was raped. Why resort to tear gas shelling, they are protesting peacefully. Police is unnecessarily resorting to violence.” Said a local.
“When you leave no space for peaceful protests, they turn violent. The students should have been allowed to protest. They were not carrying stones or anything,” Rued another local who identified himself as Umar.
Kashmir valley has been on boil ever since the alleged rape of a minor girl in Bandipora. Scores of youth have been injured with one of them said to be critical.
